Shakespeare and Company sits in a very pretty location in view of the Notre-Dame Cathedral. It’s such a welcoming place that even at night, the warm glowing light, outdoor bookcases and open door make it impossible to walk on by. What a wonderful place to browse.
Although in Paris, the majority of the books in Shakespeare and Company are in English due to its American founders. There’s a mix of old and new and plenty of those are about Paris.
Every spare nook in this place contains a book, a postcard or something interesting. There’s also a nice lefty political feel about the place….a spiritual home for me.
So, I had to buy something obviously and what else but a copy of ‘The Hunchback of Notre- Dame’ by Victor Hugo. Shakespeare and Company know they are onto a good thing and print a lovely souvenir stamp on the inside cover of your book purchase, a nice little touch which puts them up there as one of my favourites.
Bookshop for bookish people? Yep and they know it!
